Government sets deadline for Aarto demerit system rollout
Certain sections in the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Amendment Act (Aarto) will come into effect on 1 December 2025.
Implementation will begin in 69 major municipalities, including Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Mangaung, eThekwini and Cape Town.
The remaining 144 municipalities will join on 1 April 2026.
Section 24, which includes the demerit points system, will take effect from 1 September 2026.
If you exceed 15 points, your driver's license will be suspended, and the third suspension will see your license being cancelled altogether.
Phase one of Aarto was implemented in July 2021 in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
